| LIAFS
was founded by a dedicated group of staff and volunteers from Middle Country
School District who were concerned about the lack of local resources to
serve children who were victims of child abuse and neglect. The Community
House SAFEHOUSE, constructed with volunteer labor and materials with participation
of the Seabees, was the prototype for additional homes LIAFS opened in
Ridge (1990), Stony Brook (1997) and Port Jefferson Station (2000). Since
the first home opened in 1988, LIAFS has grown from a small localized agency
designed to serve the Selden-Centereach community to a regional resource
serving Long Island.
LIAFS serves a maximum of forty-five (45) children at one time from four (4) community based sites, with some four-hundred (400) children served annually. Unfortunately, each year some 125 children are turned away because of lack of capacity. Since it's inception, LIAFS has served a total of over four-thousand (4,000) children and their families. As
a community-based organization, LIAFS is keenly aware of both the responsibility
and benefits of encouraging local input and oversight of it's operations.
To this end, LIAFS' Board of Directors is currently composed of twelve
(12) volunteers who are drawn from each of the four (4) school districts
where SAFEHOUSES are located. There are additional representatives from
the professional and the business community.
LIAFS is a private, non-profit organization incorporated in 1987 in the State of New York to provide a variety of services to children and families. LIAFS' mission is to help children and families through the difficult times many experience in today's challenging and complex society. We believe that children and families can make changes in their lives, and there is always hope that families can be reunited. LIAFS is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), and approved to provide Respite Services by the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) under the Home & Community Based Waiver Program. LIAFS is a member of the Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies (COFCCA) of the State of New York, and Long Islander's for Families and Youth (LIFY) - (formerly CORAY/CARES). |
